Parents of Teens on the Spectrum Support Group

Picture
This group is intended to provide a supportive space for parents helping their teens navigate the journey through high school and beyond. Parents will gain skills to advocate for their teens while helping them build on their strengths and prepare for the next stage of life.

Parenting a teen on the spectrum can bring unique challenges—especially when a young person who has seemed to be doing well begins to struggle with increasing academic, social, or organizational demands.

This group offers a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space for parents to share experiences, celebrate their teens’ strengths, and explore challenges that may be getting in the way of their teen’s success and well-being.

Why this group?

The group grew out of an increasing number of parents seeking guidance after their teens experienced challenges such as bullying, social rejection, difficulty participating in peer activities, or becoming overwhelmed by the demands of school.

Many parents may have noticed concerns earlier and sought an evaluation or consultation, but only later recognized the need for additional support. Others may have hesitated to pursue services because of concerns about stigma, disclosing a diagnosis, or how accessing disability-related services could affect their teen’s future.

Together, we will explore these concerns and identify ways to help teens thrive while preparing for adulthood.

Topics will include:
  • Understanding and building on your teen’s strengths
  • Identifying skills needed for greater independence
  • Preparing for the transition to college, vocational training, employment, or other post-secondary paths
  • Navigating school and social challenges
  • Understanding and accessing appropriate supports and services
  • Addressing concerns about diagnostic disclosure and disability services
  • Sharing experiences and strategies with other parents
